Vocational Studies

BTEC Level 1

This is a one-year course designed to enable you to explore different vocational areas. These areas may include Business & ICT, Sport & Leisure, Health & Social Care, Hospitality, Travel & Tourism and Retail Operation. It is hoped that as you study various vocational options you will widen your knowledge, enabling you to make informed career choices.

The vocational units are at the center of this programme of study and begin with an evaluation of your skills and qualities and conclude with career planning for your future. Alongside the vocational units you will have the chance to improve your functional skills in English and Maths, or work towards GCSE’s in these areas.

You will also be offered the opportunity to enjoy work experience. This helps you to apply knowledge gained on placement to your vocational studies and past learners have found this experience most enjoyable


Once you have completed the BTEC Level 1 in Vocational Studies, to merit level, you will be able to make further choices about which direction you wish to take. Many learners decide to progress onto a BTEC First course (Level 2). Studying at Level 1 also prepares you for employment.

More than just a course

You will be suited to this course if you are enthusiastic and keen to gain further qualifications. You also need to be willing to take on a course which requires a commitment to regular attendance and punctuality.

Vocational Studies is 100% coursework.

Your level of skill in Maths and English will be assessed to ensure that you are placed on an appropriate level of study at College.

Extra help

Not only are the level 1 tutor’s subject specialists, but we also have fantastic Learning Support, learners’ needs are assessed and may result in individual support or in class support where required.

Entry Requirements

It is expected that you will have a good academic record and have followed a GCSE programme of study at school, achieving grades E, F or G in GCSE English Language and Maths.
