Each course is set up for one to two years, however, depending upon the level of the learner at entry and their individual needs, there is a possibility to progress through the qualifications and remain at college for a maximum of 3 years. 

Course overview

All of these courses are national qualifications and aim to help students with learning difficulties and disabilities improve and develop their independent life skills and prepare for work.  Students will also develop their social and personal skills working within a supportive and discreet environment, while also being part of the wider college community.

The Entry Level 1 in Pre-vocational study course has been designed to allow learners working at pre-Entry or Entry 1 to develop their personal and social skills to progress to further study or independent living. The units within this course cover areas such as communication, money skills, independent travel, sports, enterprise and creativity. Learners will also have opportunities to take part in visits, dance and drama activities and work placements.

The Entry Level 2 in Pre-vocational study

This course has been designed for learners working at or towards Entry 2 to develop their skills further to support their progression to supported employment or further study. This course will cover a wide range of units in areas such as setting goals, working with others, knowledge for living in the wider community, dealing with problems, developing self, healthy living, budgeting and preparing for work.

This course is intended to help students gain skills that will help them enter employment, build confidence and raise self-esteem. They will also have the opportunity to develop their own interests in areas such as gardening, sport and drama while taking part in external work placements.

What you do with these courses is up to you.  They will help prepare you for work, to get ready to live more independently or lead to higher level qualifications.

Learners may also have the opportunity to progress onto our Supported Internship course or our Entry 3 Vocational provision at Cheadle College.

How you will learn

The delivery of each course is designed around the needs of individual students. You will have an assessment of your skills and individual needs to see what you need to improve for the future.  Individual targets will be set and, throughout the programme, you will work towards meeting these targets as outlined in your ‘Individual Learning Plan’.

You will work in small groups of 6 – 8 learners with lively, experienced specialist teachers.  Your learning experience will include practical tasks, discussion, group work and individually set work. You will also develop your Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills at a level that suits you. Learning can be developed further with a lot of the curriculum being delivered off site in order to develop skills in ‘real’ situations.

There will also be opportunities to take part in an annual residential visit, drama productions, enterprise activities (including a college shop and various charity events), work experience and other group activities.

Groups are well supported with LSAs and a teacher. We can also provide 1:1 support if required and a variety of equipment available to enhance accessibility.

In addition to this, staff are specially trained in the use of augmentative communication such as Makaton, Widget (symbol) resources and in specialist communication equipment such as DynaVox and other devices. You will be supported at all times including lunch and break times.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed through the development of your practical skills as well as the completed work for your portfolio which will be externally moderated.

You will also be assessed on how well you meet your individual targets as set out in your Individual Learning Plan.  These will be decided on by your teachers, support staff and other people who work with you throughout the course.

We work closely with a number of agencies including Services for Young People, Pure Innovations, Social Services, Stockport CP society and local businesses in order to aid students with their transition to and from college.

Special entry requirements

There are no special entry requirements. Applicants are invited into the college for an interview and taster days to assess their suitability for the course.
