Further Maths is an additional A-Level which you can choose to take as well as A-Level Maths.
It covers mathematical concepts and tools which are not included in A-Level Maths, but are used widely in Physics & Engineering courses at university, and introduced quickly at the start of a Mathematics degree, such as matrices and complex numbers.
It introduces topics which form the basis of the study of pure mathematics at university. It provides far more depth to your study of mechanics and introduces you to Discrete Maths.
Why do it?
If you want to study for a Maths degree at university then Further Maths is invaluable, as you will otherwise lack familiarity with certain core concepts when you begin your degree.
Studying Further Maths A-Level begins your journey as a rounded mathematician who enjoys the challenge represented by advanced mathematics.
You should also strongly consider Further Maths if you want to study Physics or Engineering at a Russell Group university.
How will I learn?
Lessons are usually teacher led and could involve investigation, discussion, group work and working on examples. You will use an online text book and supplementary worksheets to support your learning.
- Mathematical research
- Engineering / Physics
More than just a course
Further Maths can provide you with analytical skills that can be applied in almost any career. You will be entered into the Senior Maths Challenge which gives you the opportunity to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold Certificate in this prestigious award.
You may also be selected to enter the Team Maths Challenge, where you compete as a team of four at Manchester University against other schools & colleges. There is a trip to see the Maths Inspiration Show in Manchester in the first term.
- Useful for most career paths
- A prestigious course
- Prepares you for a maths related degree
- You will experience a broad variety of topics within both pure and applied maths
College entry requirements for an advanced academic pathway will apply. Plus, you must have a Grade 7 or above in GCSE Maths. You also need to be studying A-Level Maths.
What do our students say?
“I chose Further Maths due to being good at maths, enjoying it and wanting to study more of it. Also, if you want to study Physics at University, Further Maths is nigh essential (which I did not realise until I’d already been studying it for a few months!!).
The teaching staff at Marple for Further Maths have been brilliant, and I’m not certain I would have kept on with the course if not for them. The same goes for the other students – it takes a particular kind of mind-set to study Further Maths, and my classmates have given the class a great dynamic that you just don’t get in any other class or subject.” David
